Natural Sharpening Stone Coticule Selected 130×70 – Ardennes Coticule
This stone offers an excellent compromise in terms of size and use. The width of 70 mm best covers the size of any standard blade and allows for excellent razor glide during sharpening. It’s a very ‘fitting’ size that I would recommend to everyone!
The Coticule Selected sharpening stone is an all-rounder. In fact, although the estimated grit is 8000/10000, the abrasive power of this stone is very respectable. It only takes a few strokes of the razor over the stone to realise how much material is removed. For this reason, it is important for the user to be careful not to apply too much force to the razor when passing over the stone.
According to the manufacturer, Ardenne Coticule, the stone is already lapped and ready to use. However, each user can arrange for an initial polishing before use.
Personally, I think that this stone, when used to its best advantage, produces a very effective and sharp edge. For me, I like to finish the finishing process under a trickle of running water until the razor begins to feel a slight suction effect on the stone. Many people like to finish with oil, but I can’t help you with that as I use a water-based finish.
This stone should be used on the yellow side, and can be used to keep the edge of the razor sharp, for a good pre-finish or to finish the finishing phase after beveling the edge on other stones with a lower grit. In fact, the most experienced users are able to use this stone taking full advantage of its abrasive power, sharpening their razor from start to finish with a Coticule Selected and managing the force impressed on the razor blade at every stage of the sharpening process. For those who are “beginners” I suggest to always be light in the passage of the razor on the stone, experimenting with different pressures only after having acquired a good basic knowledge and having worked for months with a good “elbow grease”!
